Nawtara playing an Arabic score, with the sounding note highlighted in brass.

The note other apps can’t play

A half-flat sits a quarter tone under the natural. Nawtara reads it in the key signature and plays it in tune, so the maqam keeps its colour.

Three notes on a staff: E flat, E half-flat labelled Sīkāh, and E natural. The half-flat sits halfway in pitch between the other two.♭♮

Slow the hard bars

An honest reading

A bar it is unsure of is marked to check, with your page behind it. Fix an accidental, a key signature, a rhythm, or a triplet in a few taps, and hear it at once.

A library list of four scores, each marked read cleanly.

Questions

Which notation can it read?

Printed or photographed sheet music, including Arabic notation with quarter tones, plus PDF and MusicXML. It reads the page you give it. It is not a catalogue of songs.

Does it play quarter tones?

Yes. Half-flats, half-sharps, and Arabic key signatures are read and played at the quarter-tone pitch, so a maqam keeps its intervals.

Photo or PDF?

Either. Scan with the camera, open a photo, import a PDF, or start from a MusicXML file.

Does it work offline?

Reading a new sheet needs a connection, because the reading is done on the server. Playing a sheet that has already been read, and exporting it, work offline.

What does it cost?

Free to start with 5 pages. Then a yearly plan, a lifetime purchase, or page packs. A page is one page read. Your scores stay yours.

Which languages, and which phones?

The app is in Arabic, English, and French, on iPhone, iPad, and Android.

How do I delete my data?

Delete a score in the app and it is removed from the server straight away. Anything you leave is deleted automatically after 30 days. You can also write to [email protected].

Who owns the sheets?

You keep all rights to what you upload. Upload only sheets you have the right to use: your own, public-domain music, or a copy the law of your country allows for study. Nawtara is a practice tool, not a publisher.
